Name to be Unveiled on LSU War Memorial

LSU and Cadets of the Ole War Skule will co-host the LSU Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 30, at 12 noon at the LSU War Memorial on the Parade Ground. During the ceremony, which honors former LSU students and all veterans who have given their lives in service to their country, the name of Corporal Nathan Brock Carse will be unveiled on the Wall of Honor.

Carse, a native of Harrod, Ohio, received a master’s degree in civil engineering in 2003. He died Feb. 8, 2011, during combat operations in Afghanistan while serving with the 1st Platoon of the 595th Engineer Company “Sapper.”

The noon-time wreath-laying ceremony will pay tribute to Carse with a moment of silence, TAPS and a presentation of an etched rendering of his name to his family.

The event will also include remarks by LSU Chancellor Michael Martin. A dutch-treat luncheon at the LSU Faculty Club immediately follows the memorial ceremony. Major General Harry J. “Skip” Philips, U.S. Army Reserve (Ret.) will be the keynote speaker. Reservations are required for the luncheon.

Corporal Nathan Brock Carse

November 27, 1978 – February 8, 2011

Corporal Nathan Brock Carse was born on November 27, 1978, in Harrod, Ohio. He graduated from Allen East High School in Harrod in 1997 and enrolled in Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, where he played four years of college football and earned a degree in environmental science. Following graduation, he worked in Columbus as a lab technician.

Corporal Carse moved to Baton Rouge to attend LSU and earned a master’s degree in civil engineering in 2007 then worked for an engineering firm in New Orleans, designing and rebuilding civil infrastructure damaged by Hurricane Katrina. In September 2009, he enlisted in the United States Army as a Combat Engineer. After completing One Station Unit Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., he was assigned to the Second Engineer Battalion at White Sands Missile Range, N.M. Shortly after his arrival, he deployed to Afghanistan where he was assigned to the 595th Engineer Company “Sapper” as a member of the 1st Platoon.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Army Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, and Combat Action Badge.

In addition to his Army Basic Training, Corporal Carse completed the AIT Course. He hoped to attend Officer Candidate School upon his return to White Sands Missile Range. He chose to enlist to gain a better perspective on the Army before becoming a leader of soldiers.

Corporal Carse is survived by his mother, Janis Carse, and sisters Megan and Kristin.
